How often is you school PTA communicating with parents? Do parents know what your PTA does on behalf of children each and everyday in school communities?

Parent involvement spans a broad range, from the parent who makes sure that their child is dressed and fed, to the parent who comes into school to volunteer, to the parent who takes it upon himself to learn all of the school system’s initiatives and programs. Research has shown that when parents are involved in their children’s schools their child is more successful in school. Schools benefit by partnering with parents to have needed support for all children. It is a win-win situation for all.

PTAs should encourage and support all parents in volunteer efforts for children in their school communities each and every day. Each day make it your PTA goal to ask at least one person to join and support your PTA advocacy efforts on behalf of all children. Parent involvement encourages children to be more engaged in their school communities as well as to support the academic success of children.

The seven finalists for 2010-2011 Maryland Teacher of the Year have been named.

"This year's talented finalists demonstrate unwavering dedication to teaching and academic achievement of all Maryland's students. They are masters in their field and an important reason Maryland education has been ranked number one in the nation for the second consecutive year," said Dr. Nancy S. Grasmick, State Superintendent of Schools. "These educators, unequivocally, deserve our gratefulness and acknowledgement, as well as our respect.

"The finalists (in alphabetical order by jurisdiction) include: Doris L. O'Donnell, Calvert County; Mark S. Howell, Charles County; Michelle Shearer, Frederick County; Lisa Mullen, Harford County; Matthew Kinloch, Howard County; James Schafer, Montgomery County; and Tiffany Doster, Prince George's County.The finalists were selected by a panel of judges from key Maryland education organizations representing principals, teachers, school boards, teacher unions, parents and higher education. Finalists were measured against a rigorous set of national criteria that include teaching philosophy, community involvement, knowledge of general education issues, and suggestions for professional and instructional improvement. Oral interviews with the seven finalists will be conducted on Saturday, September 11th.The 2010-2011 Maryland Teacher of the Year will be announced during a gala reception and dinner at Martin's West on October 8th. The winner will receive cash awards, technology equipment, national travel opportunities, and a new car valued at over $25,000, donated by Maryland Automobile Dealers Association.

Cartoon Network, a division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.), announced today further details of its multi-platform Bullying Prevention Campaign at the National Bullying Prevention Summit in Washington, DC. Speaking to an audience comprised of government officials, business leaders and leading educators of bullying prevention, Cartoon Network’s President and Chief Operations Officer Stuart Snyder unveiled the official title of the CAMPAIGN—STOP BULLYING: SPEAK UP—which will serve to educate and empower young bystanders to take action to reduce/prevent bullying. Bystanders represent the 75-85% of students in schools that witness incidents of bullying every year, whether on the playground, in the classroom, on the bus, on social media websites, or cell phones. The STOP BULLYING: SPEAK UP on-air and online CAMPAIGN will launch in October to coordinate with the fifth annual National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month, sponsored by the National Center for Bullying Prevention.

As part of a larger commitment to the anti-bullying efforts, CNN, sister network to Cartoon Network, which has to date covered numerous stories about the rise and growing concern over bullying in America, will also recognize October Bullying Prevention Month by presenting an Anderson Cooper 360° Town Hall event the first week in October, along with the network’s previously announced month-long series of stories on the victims, perpetrators and root causes of bullying which will air across CNN and HLN. Renowned and award-winning journalist Anderson Cooper will welcome government and education leaders, parents groups and child behavioral experts from top universities and non-profit institutions to discuss the many issues and concerns surrounding bullying.

“Bullying recently has been designated by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a national health crisis,” said David Doss, senior executive producer for Anderson Cooper 360°. “Taking a hard look at the causes, effects and, most importantly, the alternatives that kids, parents, teachers and other adults can take is what we’re most interested in exploring. Along with Anderson, it is our hope to help individuals learn that there are options available that can help put an end to bullying, particularly at such severe levels as we’ve seen in recent months.”

Snyder also introduced the newest STOP BULLYING: SPEAK UP partner, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). With direct inroads to schools, educators and local school boards, the ADL has a long history of pro-social projects that have helped to provide anti-bias training, giving students the opportunity to understand the damaging impact that bullying and bigotry have on individuals as well as the social fabric of schools. Key ADL projects that will link into Cartoon Network’s online curriculum include No Place for Hate, a free series of seminars for schools; A World of Difference®, a formal school curriculum; and Cyber ALLY, which teaches kids to be an ally to victims of digital bullying.

Additionally, David Waren, Director of Education for the Anti-Defamation League, was named to the Cartoon Network Bullying Prevention Advisory Board, a coalition of researchers and educators, as well as private organizations and government agencies to provide guidance, counsel and bullying prevention educational materials to supplement Cartoon Network’s STOP BULLYING: SPEAK UP program. Current advisory board members include Dr. Ronald Slaby, senior scientist, Education Development Center, Inc. & Center on Media and Child Health, Children’s Hospital Boston/Harvard Medical School; Dr. Susan Limber, Clemson University, Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life; Dr. Duane Thomas, University of Pennsylvania, Applied Psychology & Human Development Division; Dr. Anthony Peguero, Miami University, Department of Sociology; Captain Stephanie Bryn, U.S. Department of Health & Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration; and Robyn Glass, Founder and Executive Director of Project Change’s You Have The Power, a peer mentoring program where high school students teach bullying prevention tactics to middle and elementary school students.

United States Department of Education's Get On The Bus Campaign

Across America, school buses are rolling out to pick up students and start a new academic year. Joining those yellow buses this year will be the blue motor coach you see here, and its route will be more than 800 miles long, spanning eight states. Not your typical ride to school.Aboard the blue bus will be U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, headlining a Back to School tour with the theme “Courage in the Classroom: Honoring America’s Teachers.” Over the next two weeks Arne will visit schools that are facing challenges head-on—and demonstrating success. He will talk with teachers about how they are helping their students achieve and how the federal government can best support educators.

The tour kicks off in the South on Aug. 26 at iconic Central High School in Little Rock, where in 1957 nine courageous teenagers were the first African Americans to desegregate the school. Then the bus will travel on to Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. The second, northeastern leg begins Aug. 30 in Albany, traveling on to Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine.All along the way we’ll be talking with teachers and other educators about the critical work they’re doing to educate America’s young people. We’ll talk to parents and students about their goals for the new school year and beyond.Joining Arne will be some of the Department of Education’s Teaching Ambassador Fellows, who join us from the classroom for a year to ensure that the teacher’s voice is always being heard.You can follow the Back to School tour here on ED.gov, as well as on Facebook and Twitter. Mrs. Carrington created a semester-long service project that encouraged students and staff to pursue a healthier lifestyle. The Semester of Service project was funded through a $1,000 grant from the United Health Heroes through the Youth Service America organization. The program ran from January through April, 2010 and culminated on Global Youth Service Day on April 24, 2010.

Sam Macer
State and Local Education Advocate

Sam is a parent, grandparent, foster parent and parent volunteer who for the past twenty years has served multiple roles within PTA, and currently serves as President of Maryland PTA. Some current additional activities include serving on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Foster Parent Association; serving on the Maryland Department of Human Resources Child and Family Services Planning Advisory Committee and volunteering with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services as trainer of foster parents.

In 2003, the PTA Council of Baltimore County awarded Mr. Macer the Maryland PTA Lifetime Award and was appointed by the Board of Education of Baltimore County Public Schools, to the Minority Achievement Advisory Council and Educational Advisory Council. In 2005, he was appointed committee chair for Parent Involvement, on Dr. Grasmick’s, Maryland Parent Advisory Council (MPAC) and as a result of his work received the Maryland Parent of the Year Award.

In 2006, Sam was appointed by Dr. Grasmick to the 5 state Mid-Atlantic Comprehensive Center Regional Advisory Board. In 2009 Baltimore City Council appointed Sam to serve on the Baltimore City Department of Social Services Commission.

In 2007 Baltimore County Executive Jim Smith recognized Mr. Macer with a Baltimore County Executive Citation for supporting parent involvement in Baltimore County. Dr. Grasmick, awarded Sam with the 2007, Maryland Pride Award for his efforts in supporting the educational partnerships between students, parents and educators. The Maryland Department of Education recommended Sam to serve on the Maryland Parent Information Resource Center (PIRC) as an advisory board member. The PIRC is a statewide entity dedicated to support parents, students and educators in their efforts to increase academic achievement for all children. In 2007 the Rotary Club honored Mr. Macer with an award for community service in the area of parent involvement in education. In 2008 National PTA accepted Sam into the Train the Trainers program and he is a certified statewide trainer. He now travels to schools across Maryland providing workshops on numerous PTA and educational subjects.
